Liebermann, German painter and graphic artist, was receptive to foreign influences. While visiting France in 1874, he found himself in sympathy with Courbet, Millet, and the Barbizon School. Returning to Germany in 1878, he became a leading German Impressionist along with Corinth and Slevogt.
Liebermann was founder and president of the Berlin Sezession, but he was unable to keep abreast of the developments in Impressionism, and a decade later stood as a supporter of old-fashioned traditionalism.
